Clifton NJ Author Passes Up King in E-Sales Thursday, Jul 26 2007

Holy Moly, Batman! Who'd ever think a girl from the East Side of New York without a formal education could surpass Stephen King in any type of booksale, let alone e-book? Yet, that's what happened the week of July 23, at least it did on Fictionwise, one of the largest distributors of e-books. New John Vanderslice Live Video – “Kookaburra”

Tomorrow marks the release of blog-beloved indie rock troubadour John Vanderslice’s latest LP Emerald City, and JV’s celebrating the record with a show of love back to the blogosphere, premiering live vids of his entire album via ceremonial lap of his daily reads. John had this to say about the project and his affair with the internet:

My breakfast is so blog-heavy. It’s me, a bowl of granola, and my hot-rodded G3 doing the rounds every morning. It’s how I learn about great new bands and records, and it’s made feel a very real connection to the music community in a way which I feared might be vanishing all together.

Why not pay the internet back? Why not record the new record played live at Tiny Telephone, showcasing the many talents of my band mates, and providing free love to very worthy fans and blogs I adore? Done and done!

Recorded entirely in said all-analog studio in San Francisco’s Mission District, the virtual tour has been dubbed “Emerald City: Live From Tiny Telephone,” and fittingly, it starts at the start — with the scene-setting opening track “Kookaburra.”

Or click here for the vid in bigger and more beautiful format. There’s more virtual trek to come, of course — take the jump for the slate of John’s tour stops and album stream info.

Sixty may be the new 40, but Glenn Close doesn’t buy the math. “I have this image that, one day, my body will start melting and there’s nothing I can do about it,” she says with a quick laugh. “You can’t fight gravity forever.” Close doesn’t have much to fight these days. She’s in a happy new marriage, she just competed in her first triathlon, and she has a new FX series that launches tonight. More..

Jay Leno. “Good Day Atlanta.” 99X. Dave FM. Publicity tours can be a grind for celebrities, but Bill Engvall is practically giddy. “I did ‘Leno’ last night, flew straight to Atlanta, got to sleep at 2:30 and woke up at 5, but who am I to complain? This is what I’ve always dreamed about!” he said last week, moments after arriving for lunch at Tamarind Seed Thai Bistro at Colony Square in Midtown. The congenial standup comic — best known until now as part of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour with Alpharetta’s Jeff Foxworthy — is getting his moment in the TV sun now that Atlanta’s TBS is giving him his own sitcom under his own name, “The Bill Engvall Show.” The eight-episode run starts tonight at 9. Not Italian Cheese: The Operas of Puccini Tuesday, Jul 24 2007

once did.

But Wednesday’s Smithsonian Associates program “The Operas of Puccini” is hoping to change a few people’s perceptions.

The event, hosted by opera expert and Library of Congress musicologist Denise Gallo, focuses not only on Puccini’s operas, including the venerable “La Boheme,” “Madama Butterfly” and “Tosca,” but also on his life and career in a way that is engaging and enticing.

“My style is to make it accessible and to take the fear and pain out of it,” Gallo said. “I think [opera] is one of the most dynamic theater experiences you can have because you have orchestral music, sometimes you have dancing and you have incredible sets because opera is probably the most extravagant entertainment there is, which is why it, unfortunately, costs so much.

“You have beautiful costumes, you have amazing singers, voices that are not miked, voices that are just employed in very different ways from how people are used to hearing singers perform. And this all happens at the same time. It’s such a heavy and heady experience that you need a little preparation for it.”

Stream Figurines’ When The Deer Wore Blue

Advance listens from Danish indie outfit Figurines’ forthcoming LP have seen ‘em expand the American-guitar-rock aesthetic to include Brian Wilson nods and mountain-prarie psych pop, a promising peek at their life after Skeleton. Now the band’s inviting you to join the listening party, with a full album stream of When The Deer Wore Blue. Just listening now, and hearing a decade shift in the sonics: Welcome to the ’60s. Beach Boys harmonies (”The Air We Breathe,” “Lips Of The Soldier”) tambourine (”Angels Of The Bayou”), Summer of Love staccato riffage (”Drunkard’s Dream”), all with that delicious Danish melodicism.
